Walking along the beach, just before sunset was one of his favorite things to do, he loved it. Today though something in particular weighed in his mind. It had been nearly two months since he had taken her home to her mother and given her over. Her mother had been understanding and thanked him kindly for bringing her back to her...
Gabrielle...
He felt tears prick at his eyes for some unknown reason. She was so kind, so gentle, so caring and he had hurt her. It was his fault she had fallen into her attack. The young man rubbed his eye with his wrist. Why was he so stupid? He should have known that seeing him like that would have been a shock... why did he let her see him?
Because you wanted to be understood... you wanted someone else to understand you...
His mind told him and he shook his head. No. He stopped and let the cool water lap over his feet, burying him there in the sand.
Are you falling for her Jake?
His mind sent that question out through the caverns of his brain. He blinked. What? No. He loved Bella. Didn't he? He had only met Gabrielle a few times but for some reason he felt like he'd known her forever. She could understand him in his woulf form... she was understanding... she kept coming up in his thoughts...
Maybe I am... He looked out over the water thoughtfully.

Gabrielle drove down the road, barely paying attention to where she was going. Although she'd travelled in this direction only a few times, she knew the way by heart. She didn't need to really watch.
She hadn't seen hide nor hair of Jacob since her fit a few months ago. Now that school was out for the summer, she'd decided it was time to come and face him once again. She had tried to come out here several times, but each time she had been unable to bring herself past the cliffs. Most of the time she would just take herself up to the cliffs and sit there, staring out over the violently churning water. It was a beautiful and disturbing site to behold.
This time she couldn't punk out. She had to do it. Fortunately, she wouldn't have to look far. She found her friend wandering the beach. "Jake!" She called, jumping out of the car, not bothering to turn it off or close the door.

He blinked as he heard her voice and turned around. "Gabrielle." He choked out. What was she doing here? He saw her running towards him and caught her in his arms. "Gabrielle." He breathed. "You're okay." He pressed his face into her hair and took in a deep breath, breathing in her familiar herbal scent. "Thank the gods you're okay." He hugged her tightly, but wary of his own strength only held her as much as he would allow himself. Then he realized what he was doing. He drew away, backing up. "Gabi... what are you doing here?" He backed away. "You-You shouldn't be-"

"Shouldn't I be were?" She asked, poking fun. "School's out so there's really nowhere to be right now. And... I missed you." She said proudly, keeping herself from blushing. She wasn't going to be ashamed of missing him. He was like her best friend. "And you wouldn't answer my calls or anything, and... I tried to come out and see you, but... it's hard sometimes, ya know?" She sighed and took one of his hands, feeling how terribly warm he was. "Why are you so hot? Are you sick?"

"I-I'm always like this... its a side effect of... you know..." He looked down. She shouldn't be around him. Not ever. He was a danger to her. His eyes narrowed. "Gabrielle... you shouldn't be here." He said in a solemn voice and turned to walk off, pulling his hands away from her.

"Like hell I'm not!" She grabbed onto his hand again. "Jacob, why shouldn't I be here?" His skin almost burned hers, it was so hot... but it felt good, oddly enough. "Answer me, Wolf Boy!" She made a face and refused to let go of his hand. "Tell me."

Jacob was tired of running from it, he finally did something that he new the moment after he'd done it that he shouldn't have. He swung around, wrapped his arms around her and kissed her, hard yet tender. He slipped his hands up to either side of her face as he held her in the kiss, afraid that she would pull away. He could hear her heart stop for a second then sensed the tingle up her spine. His inner self grinned wolfishly.
She can feel that all the way down to her toes...

She was taken aback, surprised by his sudden... affection. She hadn't thought he saw her like that, not at all. Surely he must have seen her the way everyone else did: as a freak who had fits. But, she should have guessed, he did not. But this... this was puting her on the spot. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this.
"Wait," She said, pulling away, "not now..." she bit down on her lip. "I can't handle this right now."

"I know... I just had to get it out of the way." He looked down, not meeting her eyes. So she didn't feel the same way... just as well. "Because we can't ever see each other again Gabrielle." He took her hands in his much larger ones. "Do you understand me? I don't want you to come back to La Push every again." He stated, looking her in the eye, when she avoided him he grabbed her by her chin and locked her eyes into his. "I. Don't. Want. You. Coming. Back. Here. Do you understand me?" He said sternly.

"You're not my father, Jacob." She said, her hazel eyes meeting his. "My daddy died. My daddy could tell me what to do, you can't. I'm going to come back to La Push, if just to spite you. Or maybe I won't. It just depends. You must first tell me why you don't want me to come here. You must tell me why. If you don't, I'll come and camp out in front of your house every day. Got it, Wolf Boy?"

"BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO HURT YOU AGAIN!" He shouted all of a sudden. This was getting weirder and weirder... why was he so angry with himself? He felt tears well up in his eyes but he hid them.

"Hurt me?" She whispered. "How could you hurt me, Jacob? You've been nothing but my savior for the past six months. Do you realize how often you've kept me from losing control? After meeting you, I've been able to sleep more, eat more. I haven't been seeing things. It's like you fixed me." She wrapped her arms around him. "Don't push me away now, not after this. Please."

"You..." She was giving him mixed signals. His mind wouldn't work that way. Did she want him there or did she not want him? "I'm the reason that you fell into that last attack." He bowed his head. "I should have known that letting you see me as that horrible beast would throw you into another attack... I just knew it but... I let you anyways..." He kept his arms limp at his sides. "I knew... that letting you see that monster that I am..." He trailed off, looking out over the ocean.

She couldn't help but laugh. "Do you honestly think that's why I fell ill that day?" She raised her eyebrows at him, half-smiling. "Jacob, you're not the reason. You're not the reason at all. If it were your fault, I would have seized the moment I walked into the room. But no, it wasn't you." She poked him in the chest. "You're so self-loathing sometimes, you know that? Emo kid." She was teasing him, of course.

"Eh?" He heard Emo and his ears pricked. "Gabi... why are you doing this to me?" He looked down and sighed. "So we're just going to stay friends right?" His chocolate eyes grew sad, dimming slightly as he hung his head.

She sighed and turned her head down, closing her eyes. "Jake, Jake, Jake..." she looked back up. "I like you, I really do. But... I'm still reeling from the deaths of so many people that I love, especially my father and my best friend. It's why I haven't ventured to make any other friends... except for you, of course. If I got involved with you, some day it would end. I don't even like thinking about the end... and honestly, I feel something... in the wind. You see, when I was little, my mother would tell me stories. In every single one of those stories, someone could feel something tragic about to happen. Tha'ts how I feel. It's in the wind, I feel it every day... didn't happen until I met you. I'm... too afraid of being more involved with you, but more afraid of not having you around at all. Do you understand?" Those words were more painful than... well, less painful than the death of her father, but more painful than anything else she'd ever felt.

"I understand..." He said bitterly and turned away from her. "I understand perfectly." He shook his head. This was perfect... wonderful... the girl he's falling for... hates him. That was what he drew from her comment. She hated him. "Those feelings... are never true." He said then began to run, run on all fours away from her. He couldn't face her anymore. "DON'T EVER COME BACK HERE!" He shouted over his shoulder before he disappeared into the shadows again.

She dropped to her knees, her eyes filling up with tears. This time she let them fall, because she didn't care anymore. She thought she was being perfectly clear that she needed him... apparently not.
And he hated her.
