Because the Twilight Lexicon does not provide an explanation for werewolves at this time, I will write one!
The ability to become a werewolf is passed through bloodlines. Usually, one becomes a werewolf when they hit puberty, but only because vampires are in the area. If no vampires are present, then the werewolf in a person does not develop.
Becoming a werewolf is a very painful process. When transformed, the person's body temperature spikes, and they are easily angered. When angered, their bodies painfully transform into that of a very large wolf. Over time, the werewolf will learn to control his or her anger, and thus being able to control when they transform.
Werewolves have a very high body temperature to allow them to stay warm. They also heal very fast. Wounds, depending on how severe they are, heal very quickly.
Werewolves are, by nature, the enemy of the vampire. Stephenie Meyer does not give a reason for this.
