Jacob sighed softly, his father had gone out for the day and had left him home alone. He leaned back against the wall of the den with a groan. This was getting infuriating. First Bella... and now this girl. She was haunting him, no matter where he looked...
THERE SHE WAS!
It was like she was following him... but for some reason or another their paths just seem to cross no matter what he did. It had been almost a month since their last meeting on the beach, and he was almost glad, it meant that he didn't have to lie to get away from anyone anymore.
He sighed again, running his hands through his now short hair. She was just... too much... it still seemed like she was sent to replace Bella.
But... by chance, he had heard something interesting from someone in passing... for some reason, people shied away from her because she had these strange spells... some kind of epileptic seizure... He closed his eyes... well whatever it was... it wasn't a bother to him... it wasn't his problem...

I shouldn't be here. I really shouldn't. He's going to think I'm some sort of weird psycho girl from New Orleans. Yay for me. Ugh, why did I have to do this? Stupid me! Stupid me! He probably already hates me for bringing up what's-her-face. Oh god, I'm so stupid... but I have to apologize. Wait... how do I apologize for something like that? How was I supposed to know it would make him uncomfortable? Okay, I should have known... I'm not a complete idiot. No, yes I am. I'm a complete idiot. She was arguing with herself, but she made herself pull up in front of his house and climb out of her car.
She scolded herself, but her feet kept walking. Her heart was beating faster than ever, and she was beginning to sweat despite the cold. She climbed up the short steps to his porch and knocked on his door, but her knock was weak. She was hoping he wasn't home so she could leave, never come back, and hope she never saw him again. She couldn't handle more embarassing moments.

"Eh?" His ears peaked and he looked up.
Now who could that be? Bella? No... she's just walk in...Eh... might as well answer it, could be for Dad.
He stood up and stretched, his muscled frame a bare other than his jeans, this time unrolled and dragging on the ground slightly. The band of his plaid red and black boxers showed from under his jeans that covered his feet. His hair was stiking up in random directions as he grabbed a t-shirt and walked towards the door. Then he heard the knock again.
"ALRIGHT! Alright... I'm coming, hold your hors-" He stopped short as he saw who it was, still holding the rumpled shirt in his hand he blinked.

She had to look almost straight up. She forced her eyes away from his well sculpted figure and bit her lip, a weak giggle escaping her lips. "Um... yeah, hi." She coughed, fidgiting with the hem of her Led Zepplin hoodie. Her breathing got faster, and she had to breath deeply, just like her therapist said.
"Breath as deep as you can to fight off an attack," Dr. Roger's had said, "if you feel an attack coming. Breath deep!"
I'm breathing, doc, but it ain't helping! She thought to herself, and forced herself to say something to him. "Yeah, hi, I just came to you know, apologize for last time, I was being a complete idiot and all that stuff, so I hope you'll forgive me okay bye now!" She turned and began to walk away, her cheeks a deep red.

He blinked and watched her go. Then something struck him.
"WAIT!" He shocked even himself as he used his extreme speed to grab her arm and fling her around, basically pinning her to the car. His tanned face tinged crimson, an amazing feat, not that she could see it. He took in a deep breath. She smelled so beautiful, almost... no... better than Bella, like herbs... like mint and chamomile and sage... Then he smelt something different, panic, she was having a panic attack of sorts. He could hear her heart beat faster, faster and hear her trying to calm herself down by breathing deeply.
"Come inside." He stated. It wasn't a question, it wasn't a command... it was more of just a statement. He could sense her panic and he knew she had to be in a controlled environment. Then, without waiting for an answer and not even thinking he picked her up and carried her inside the house, setting her down on one of the chairs and poured her a cold glass of water automatically, setting it down in front of her.
"Here, this might help calm you down." He had no idea why he was doing this. She had brought up bad memories for him, she had... not really done anything wrong... he knew he was just worried about her finding out about what he was.

She was more than shocked when he took her inside. Heck, she was extremely shocked when he had called to her and spun her around. He was really, really fast... she'd never seen anything so fast before.
No, that was a lie, but she wasn't going to think about it.
She nodded at him when he set down the glass of water and downed it in one gulp, grateful for it. "Sorry," she said timidly, "I'm just a wreck. Don't mind me..." she let out a forced, high pitched laugh. "Thanks for the water." She poked the glass with one of her thin, paleish tan fingers. "Water tastes different out here. Back home, it was always... weird. It's much better here." She rambled when she was confused.

He sighed, listening to her heartbeat slow back down to normal. He turned his back to her, putting his hands on the counter near the sink, the muscles in his back rippled under the tan skin. "How-how long have you been having these attacks?" He asked without turning around. He was trying so hard not to look at her, she was almost painfully beautiful. Something that he hadn't thought about since... well... Bella.

Her skin burned, turning bright pink. "Oh... yeah... I suppose you've heard about that. My stupid mother can't keep her mouth shut and tells everybody." She growled. "'Oh, my daughter. Yeah, she has these horrible fits about her past. Oooh!'" She mimicked her mother, making her voice high.
She tapped her fingers on the table and sighed. "Not really all that long. I was really surprised when I started getting them. Like... it's been over a year since Katrina and all, but I didn't get them when I was living in the Superdome, or anything like that. Honestly, it started when I met... um... the Cullens." She wasn't sure if mentioning them would do anything to him, since Bella hangs around them. "But I was outside one day, after school. It was my first day here, and I'd met one of the Cullens at school. It wasn't raining yet, but when I got home, it started raining. I was outside, driving home, when I heard thunder. Then when I got home, there was lightning... then rain and stuff. Then I just... started seeing things." She shivered, holding back tears. "I saw my family on top of our roof," her voice was almost a whisper, "I saw my best friend David drown in the muddy water..." She shook her head. "I... I didn't know what was happening to me. My mom took me to see a therapist, who decided I had this thing called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that it was pretty normal for people not to show symptoms until months, even years, after the event." She sighed, realizing she was talking about herself too much. "Yeah..."

He considered this a moment. Then thought about something. What happened to her father? Dare he ask? He shut his eyes tight, to think that he had been through all that! She was a Katrina survivor? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder... he had heard about that... it could be triggered by anything. He squeezed his eyes tighter. There was only one thing he could do...
Follow her...
For some reason his natural instinct was to protect her, he just had to... He would follow her and make sure she was alright... If he caught any signs of an attack he would calm her down... He listened to the thunder roar overhead as it began to pour. If he let her go she would get stuck. He decided to make her stay.
"May I inquire as to what happened to your father?" He took a wild guess and settled on vampires. Because the fits were triggered by the Cullens, he figured it was vampires.

A depressed look settled over her face. "Well, that's a tough one to answer, because I'm not quite sure myself. He was alive with us on our roof and stuff, and when we were rescued, he lived in the Superdome with us. Then one day... he just..." she let out an involuntary shudder. "He got up in the middle of the night to go do something, get water I suppose, and I was thirsty so I got up and followed after him. He didn't realize I was following, and I almost got lost looking for him. The I found him... dead, on the floor. When I showed up, somebody ran away. I ran to Daddy, but it was too late. He was so pale..." She teared up, but wiped them away before Jake was able to see.

"Vampires." He muttered under his breath. He suddenly felt anger flood thorugh his body, for some unknown reason. He heard lightning sizzle through the air outside as the rain pounded down on the house. The sound of thunder overhead. He grimaced, gripping the counter. The young werewolf felt a growl rise in his throat but fought it down.
"I-I'm sorry that happened." He continued to fight back the growl, he knew that if he let himself get too out of control the mixture of anger and the Cullen residence nearby he would turn. He fought back the bristle on the back of his neck he felt and squeezed his yes shut, feeling his heart strain against his chest. Someone had hurt her father... hurt her.
What's wrong with me???
He took in a deep shaky breath that sounded much like a growl.
DAMN!
His muscles strained, physically trying to control himself. He had to keep her from finding out about what he was.
"Gabri-Gabrielle... I-I'm sorry." He shook slightly, his eyes squeezed as tightly as they would go. He had to try and protect her from these spells. "I promise... I will do everything in my power to keep these attacks from happening." He ground out between clenched teeth.

She was confused. "There's really little other people can do to fight then. They're so unexpected, they can happen at any time, any place. One thing can trigger them. A name, a sound, a sudden movement." She sighed, resting her head on the cool table. "Attacks aren't all that comes with it. I can't sleep, it's hard to eat, I hurt all over."
She lifted herself and smiled warmly at him. "Don't worry about me, Jake. I'll be fine. We hardly know each other, anyway." She stood and walked over to him, touching his shoulder. "I'm going to head home, okay? Mom'll be pissed if I'm not home soon, so... yeah. I guess I'll see you later, okay?"

"NO!" He shouted. He couldn't believe he had just raised his voice. "No... You can't go out in this rain. The mud... you'll get stuck in the mud." He told her, turning around. "We have a phone, call your mother and tell you that you'll be home as soon as the storm's over, tell her you're at the Black's place." He told her and handed her the phone adamantly. "Please... I don't want to have to worry about you." He looked her in the eye, his chocolate eyes bored into hers. "Please." He pleaded.

Her eyes grew round as he raised his voice. "Oh-okay..." She stuttered and took the phone from him, picking up the reciever and dialing her home number.
Somebody on the other line picked up. "Mom?" She said. "Yeah, I know. Yeah, I know. YEAH, I KNOW!" She sighed in exasperation. "Yeah, mom, I finished that." She paused as her mother spoke. "Yeah, anyway, listen dude. Okay fine, not dude. Ma'am. There's a storm and I'm at a friends house in La Push. I don't want to get stuck in the mudd, and you know how I can't find my way out of problems, so I'll be home when the rain stops." She rolled her eyes as her mother said something. "I'll be fine. Medicine? What medicine? OH! That medicine. Yeah, I'll pick it up on my way home, assuming I don't get stuck in the mud. Okay, I'll talk to you later. Bye Mom, I love you." She hung up the phone and let out a sigh.
"Sorry about that, she likes to talk. Doesn't matter about what, as long as she's talking." She smiled. "You really shouldn't be all that worried about me. I can handle everything." She couldn't help but be warmed by his kindness, his care. He was the first person to really give a damn about her, other than Bella.

"I..." He stopped as thunder clapped again. "I'm sorry I shouted at you." He looked down. "Listen... may I leave you here for a second?" He blinked at her. "I mean... I won't be gone long... I just have to patro- look for something." He stopped. "I-uh... I'll be right back." He disappeared through the door and walked around the side of the house to the garage. From the kitchen one could see the garage light turn on and see Jacob's head poke through the door and look around then disappear inside. Then the light went out again.
Jack wrapped his arms around himself in the corner of the garage, closing his eyes. He had to try and keep her from finding out about what he was. He felt himself change, into his wolf form, it was painful the change, it always was. A howl escaped his wolfish lips.
Smooth... shit... she can't see me like this...
He clawed at his own back, curled into a ball, digging his claws into his own back. He growled low in his throat, he knew this would happen. Then another painful howl tore from him again.
Please don't come out here!
He squeezed his eyes shut and pulled himself into a tighter ball.

"What the heck?" Gabrielle muttered to herself as he suddenly left her, running into the garage. "Confusing boy," she said with a weak smile, shaking her head.
She waited there for a few moments, humming to herself a song her mother had sung to her when she was a child. It was a song from Italy, but she wasn't sure what it meant. It was still a beautiful little lullaby, especially coming from her mother. Donatella was a very talented singer. "Wish I would have gained that particular ability..." she thought to herself, frowning.
Five minutes passed, and he still hadn't returned. She was getting a bit anxious. She didn't like being alone in a strange place, and although the small house was rather warm, it was still strange and foreign. Jake made it more like home...
She decided to go out to the garage to see what he was doing, to check up on him. And, although she wasn't going to admit it to him, to have some company. She had no idea until then how lonely she really was...
She made her way out of the building, sheilding her head from the rain by pulling her hood over her head. Her hair wasn't going to survive this weather. "Jake?" She asked, opening the garage door. "Jake, are you in here?"

His entire body shook as he heard her open the house door and walked towards the garage, as she opened the door he growled slightly and dug his claws in deeper. He was ashamed of what he was. He didn't want her to see him like this... for all he knew he could go crazy and attack her... If he did that... he would never forgive himself.
"Shut the door and leave." He growled, his voice more of a bark really. "Get out of here! Go back to the house." His wolf ears twitched as he tightened his eyes again.
Dear God... please go back inside!

All Gabrielle heard were loud howls, loud and terrifying howls. Did he have a dog? "Jake?" She asked, searching the wall for the switch. "Jake, what're you doing in here?" He wasn't responding. Was he playing... hide and go seek or something? "Jake-" she stopped when she found the switch and turned the lights on.
In the corner was a brown... wolf thing. It was too big to be a wolf, too big for even a bear. She'd never seen anything like it. Terror struck her hard, her heart began to beat its way out of her chest. She couldn't even scream. "Jake!" She whispered, but she wasn't talking to the thing. She was wondering if the thing had eaten him... "Jake...!"

He unlatched his claws from his back and turned around slowly, standing at his full height then dropped down on all fours. His brown eyes latched into hers. "Gabrielle..." He growled softly, closing his eyes and lowering his head. If at first he was afraid of attacking her he knew now that he wouldn't for some reason he had no desire to attack her at all. He whimpered slightly, he hadn't wanted her to see him like this at all. "I'm sorry." He growled, not that he expected her to understand him.

Pushing past her terror, a familiar voice spoke to her in the back of her head. "Gabrielle..." it was a soothing, caring voice. Jake... "I'm sorry."
She searched deep inside her for the courage she'd left in New Orleans on her roof and stepped forward, her muddy boots clicking softly on the ground. She reached a hand out and stretched her fingers, making her way over to the brown wolf thing. "Jake?" She knew it was a completely illogical thing to think that whatever that thing was was Jake, but she asked anyway. Not everything can be explained with logic.
